As you currently know, English has been standardized. Meaning, where ever you people who speak English will usually speak in a way that you could understand with a few regional differences. Back when people spoke Middle English, this wasn't the case.
Then there came Chancery English. Evidence indicates that Chancery English is the precursor to Standard Written English. This standardization was fuelled by the need for a standard written communication between lawmakers and government officials of the time.
